So what exactly is “MyTerms”

Also known to data geeks in the community as IEEE 7012

IEEE P7012 and the MyTerms Proposition

The Standard for Contractual Terms the IEEE P7012 is the Draft Standard for Machine Readable Personal Privacy Terms.

This standard defines a mechanism for establishing contractual interactions and agreements between individuals (first parties) and service providers (second parties).

The core idea of the "MyTerms" proposition is driven by P7012, which describes how individuals, as first parties, can proffer their privacy requirements as contractual terms. These terms must be selected from a collection of standard-form agreements contained in a roster maintained by an independent and neutral non-business entity.

Key requirements of the standard include:

• The first party must point to a preferred agreement (or set of agreements) from which the second party accepts one.

• If both parties agree, the contract must be signed electronically by both parties or their agents.

• A matching record of the agreement must be kept by both sides in a form that is easily available and can be retrieved, audited, or disputed later.

Turning IEEE 7012 (“MyTerms”) into a strategic advantage

The data landscape is on the brink of a fundamental shift.

IEEE 7012 — known as MyTerms — is set to become the global standard for how individuals define, control, and consent to the use of their personal data. It will transform how brands engage with customers, how technology systems interoperate, and how trust is established and maintained in a privacy-first world.

For forward-thinking organisations, this is not a compliance exercise — it’s a once-in-a-generation opportunity to reimagine data as a strategic asset. Brands that act early will build deeper customer relationships, unlock new revenue streams, and future-proof their data ecosystems against regulatory and technological disruption. Those that don’t risk falling behind in a rapidly changing competitive landscape.

DataPal’s Proof of Concept (PoC) programme is designed to help enterprise leaders seize this opportunity - from education and readiness assessment through to full-scale implementation.

Our tiered approach provides board-level clarity on three essential fronts:

  • Strategic Foresight: Understand how IEEE 7012 will reshape your industry, your customer relationships, and your operating model.

  • Commercial Impact: Quantify the risks and opportunities for your business, and prioritise the Use Cases with the greatest revenue and efficiency potential.

  • Execution Roadmap: Move beyond theory with a clear, evidence-based pathway to implementation, designed to deliver measurable value and competitive advantage.

Each tier builds upon the last - from foundational understanding to readiness scoring to hands-on activation - giving leadership teams the intelligence and confidence to make informed, board-level decisions about the future of their data strategy.

In a world where privacy, consent, and trust will define market leadership, IEEE 7012 represents both an inflection point and an advantage for those prepared to lead. DataPal’s PoC programme ensures your organisation isn’t just ready for this future - it’s shaping it.
